No Sniveling

November 21st, 2011

"Double or single shot?" he’d snapped. The woman hadn’t heard him, or at least had realised he was addressing her. He barked his question once more. She paused, then replied "Single". Turning away to face her partner, she’d rolled her eyes in disgust. Her own parting shot as she left a particularly enthusiastic "Do have a wonderful day".

Small coffee shop in Myers Flat, a few miles south of the campground I’d stopped at the previous night. I’d wandered in a little earlier, the service cordial rather than caustic. My eyes drawn to the various signs on the walls. "No Sniveling". "And your whining opinion would be?" "Sarcasm. One of the free services I offer". He wasn’t joking.

Brush with Bob

November 20th, 2011

P1070085

I’d managed to evade crocodiles, poisonous snakes, deadly spiders, the odd wallaby wandering onto the highway in Australia. Even wild bears, wolverines, mountain lions and moose in North America. Quietly pleased I’d so far avoided any form of aggressive encounter with the local fauna. Only to fall foul of Bob. The house rabbit. Wondering why my netbook screen had unexpectedly dimmed. To find the little bunny was busy chewing through the power lead. Alas, the low voltage side, so no harm done to the family pet. Couldn’t quite say the same about my cable.

Curious encounter in Trinidad

November 19th, 2011

Forceful manner, bordering on the aggressive. But not, I thought, intentionally so. More a directness devoid of any of the normal social softening. Blunt. She was a school teacher from a little south of San Francisco, eager, she said, to escape California. But she’d got stuck further up the coast in Gold Beach. She was very sketchy on the details and it didn’t seem wise to pry further.

I’d pulled into a small rest stop besides the highway. Brief coffee break before pressing on to my night’s planned stop with host Peggy. Approached, largely out of curiosity I’d thought, by the woman whilst I was perched on a bench munching an apple.

I should join her in San Jose. We’d go to lunch at Apple’s headquarters with a friend. Most insistent. She repeated her e-mail address several times, despite the obvious absence of anything on my part to write it down. I offered her my website address. Explained that I could be contacted through it. And then she left. Never heard from her again. A curious encounter.
