About Ken
Born in Lancashire in 1969, Ken spent his formative years in Wales. After a successful career in engineering management spanning almost 20 years, he set off in September 2009 to fulfil a long-held dream to cycle solo around the world. He returned home in February 2012.
An experienced touring cyclist, the bicycle was, nevertheless, really just the means of travel rather than an end in itself. The real challenge was the ability to solve problems – as diverse as finding enough food to sustain the physical effort, arranging visas, dealing with changing political situations en route, to simply driving oneself forward in the face of adversity – and to gain a better understanding of people and places encountered on the journey
Inspired by his own experiences at The Outward Bound Trust’s Eskdale centre in 1985, Ken is a long-standing supporter of The Trust’s work with young people. Struck by strong resonance between the charity’s core values and those of his own endeavours on the road, he is keen to use the experience to continue to raise both awareness of, and funds for, The Outward Bound Trust.
Eager to see how things had changed since his experiences with The Trust in 1985, before setting off around the World, Ken cycled between centres in North Wales, the Lake District and Scotland, clocking up over 1,000 miles. Download the article below to get a flavour of what he found.
