Bargara beckons

May 18th, 2011

Family

Promised not to leave it another forty two years. Be back a bit sooner. But it was time to return to the road. Continue the journey south. To the seaside town of Bargara. Few days riding. Off to stay with an old school friend of my neighbour Jon.

As much as it’d been simply great to chat to second cousin Ken, and his wife Sue, I’d enjoyed being able to muck in. Digging trenches. Moving rocks. Even a foray into the kitchen. But probably best to skip over my efforts at reversing with a trailer. Or the dubious recipe I’d found for cheesy mash. Interesting flavour Sue had said. I’d agreed. Wholeheartedly. Family can be so terribly polite.

Nose for it

Half way down Australia. Two and a half continents so far. Feeling reflective. What made for a good stop? Nothing normally ever booked. Relying instead on instinct to find somewhere before the light goes. Putting a tent up in the dark fine. But finding a pitch definitely not.

Dwelling on my favourite spots. What had made them for me? Probably not what you’d expect. Cost not a defining feature. No correlation. My top four pitches ranging from free to well over twenty dollars – about sixteen pounds – for a night. Nor are these places distinguished by their facilities – washrooms, showers and the like. For this is Australia. Land of Regulation. Rare to see anything that isn’t more than acceptable.

No. It’s the intangibles. The little things. Warm welcome. That the owner or manager actually cares. Takes pride in the place. Loan of a dry towel. Always promising to return it, joking I’ve the slowest getaway vehicle in the world. Adding I’ve already got plenty of bathrobes in the panniers. Then there’s a sense of security. Trusting fellow campers won’t pilfer. And a slab of dry concrete, an empty camp kitchen and a bit of piece and quiet never goes amiss.

[Favourite four sites shown above – clockwise from top left – Sarina Palms Caravan Village (just south of Mackay) www.sarinapalms.com.auSt Lawrence wetlands free site ($2 for shower) between Mackay and Rockhampton about 10 km off the Bruce Highway – Cambroon Caravan and Camping Park (11 km south of Kenilworth in the Mary Valley, south of Gympie)www.cambrooncaravanpark.com.auChilders Tourist Park & Camp (5 km outside Childers, just off the Goodwood Road)]

Rooting around

May 17th, 2011

Sue was quick to remind me. An innocent slip in the local supermarket. Said I’d have a root around in the kitchen later. Fine northern expression. In England. But in Australia an entirely different meaning.

Left wondering what the Aussies made of the likes of rooting compost. Still, sheds some light on the holiday quip "Which ’route’ are you taking? Just the usual. The wife."

Getting the hang of it

May 16th, 2011

Definitely getting the hang of this. Riding around the world on a pedal cycle. Suppose you do after a while. Six hundred days or so. Slow learner? Or late developer? Not really. For I’ve only just completed the last of the climatic challenges. Wet tropics. True, I’ve no illusions about how tough Alaska may be in short while. But I’ve done cold before. And critters. Admittedly not quite as big as wild bears. Cane toads a nuisance. But they don’t actually eat you.

My routines now settled. Very procedural. Yep. Always count the tent pegs. Sixteen. Plus a titanium spare. Skirmish the site before setting off. Box search. Which might irritate others. Frustrating. But, for once, I genuinely don’t care. Not a jot. Because my little foibles have got me to Australia. Case of if it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. Must remember that when working on my trusty steed.

And now very relaxed on the road. Rolling along. Content. Taking things in my stride. Carefully honed grasp of what really matters. Quietly confident. Never cocky. But no long hair. Definitely no beard. No interest in illicit substances. Or pipe and slippers. Just the odd bar of chocolate. Helps keep me in touch with my feminine side.

Sights already set on North America. Still plenty of Australia left. But there’s a surety about it. Soon have it in the bag. No doubt there’ll be a few trials and tribulations before I reach Tasmania. Problems to solve. But lots of experience now to draw on. Wonder what I’ll do when I eventually get home….

Cracking up

Golden rule of cycle maintenance. Whenever possible always work on a clean bike. Problems easier to spot. And fix. Like the cracked sprocket on the rear wheel. Disappointing. Worn teeth I don’t mind. To be expected. But tiny fractures. No. Fortunately carrying a spare. And the requisite specialist tool.

Quickly discovering replacing the sprocket would require a chain whip. Common enough item. Struggling to conceive of any bike shop not having one. Which is why I don’t have one. Far too bulky. Instead, kindly lent one by Lisa at Agnes Water’s local hire shop. With a little help from second cousin Ken, repair soon effected.

Sea cucumbers

May 16th, 2011

Sea cucumbers from Ken Roberts on Vimeo.

Ken discovers sea cucumbers in the shallow waters around Lady Musgrave Island. Southern end of the Great Barrier Reef. Commentary includes teasing references to Chinese eating habits. Not in the least bit influenced by the presence of forty or so of their number close by. Heaven forbid. Just remember, the only thing they won’t eat with legs is a table. Enough said.
