Someone’s daughter

March 7th, 2011

I’d suggested a sociable coffee. Invited her to choose a suitable place to enjoy a beverage. Where she’d feel comfortable. Safe. Under the circumstances possible I was being unduly protective. After all, just wanted to chat. With someone I’d met on my travels. Who’d struck me as a really quite interesting individual. A person. Found her warm, intelligent, engaging and generous.

A few brief interruptions to the flow of conversation. Couple of texts. The odd phone call. Work, she explained. Apologetically. Quite understood, I said. And I did. Probably rather more than she imagined. For, however plausible her account of what she did, couldn’t quite get past the fact that her mobile number was an exact match for one I’d found in the Classified Ads section of the local paper. Accompanying text tallied up pretty well.

A discovery the product of a suspicious mind and a little curiosity. Something she’d said earlier that just hadn’t stacked up. Checks and balances on the road. Instinctive. Not that I’d mentioned any of this. After all, wanted to meet the real person. Someone’s daughter.

A little lubrication

March 6th, 2011

"How 80’s". Conceited. Germanic. Not quite what I’d expected when I’d popped into a local, albeit expensive looking, bike shop. After a small tube of lithium grease. More than sufficient for my needs. Proven to be quite effective over more than 20,000 kilometres. In the depths of winter. In the searing heat of the desert. Absolutely no need for any of the more exotic products. With their eye-watering price tags. Chose to leave rather than engage in debate. Pointless.

Brian - web

Pleased that instead I’d entrusted my trusty steed’s front wheel to a smaller shop nearby. Brian’s. Chosen because I’d had a peek at his workshop. Confident he’d do a good job changing the bearings. Best ten bucks I’d spent. Saving me a day’s frustration.

Flying had necessitated dismantling my bicycle. Simply to get her into the bike box I’d acquired in Hong Kong. Once unpacked, bit of an overhaul had seemed sensible. Mostly re-greasing before re-assembly. Checking for wear and tear. A few modifications for the Tropical climate.

Hostage to fortune

March 5th, 2011

Introducing Skippy. The gloves a touch of irony. Fight like girls apparently. No concept of the Queensberry Rules. But this particular marsupial shortly to be a very well travelled kangaroo. Accompanying Emma, my trusty steed, and I all the way down Australia. Popping up in the odd video clip or photo as we go. Already done some TV work. No, really.

Skippy - web

Alas, no room in the bag for Skippy to venture into Alaska. Need the space for extra rations. Instead, she’ll be given to a good home. That of whoever donates the most to The Outward Bound Trust during my time in Australia. Otherwise its sausages. With baked beans. You have been warned. So, please read the terms and conditions below and then click here to donate. Help the funds roll in to enable young people to unlock their real potential.

Southbound to Sydney…

Southbound to Sydney. Certainly. But drawn towards Tasmania. And Somerset. From where I hail from in the UK. Has to be done.

Service announcement

March 2nd, 2011

As the Tropics go Queensland is terribly civilised. Decent coffee. No malaria. But never dull. Floods, cyclones, monsoon rains, man eating crocodiles, deadly snakes and spiders, Dengue Fever. Gives the place a certain charm. Laugh a minute. Actually, I’m loving it. Now I’ve acclimitised. Good to be back under canvas.

What this may mean is that blogging becomes a bit more sporadic. Searching for power to run all my communications equipment. Whilst taking care to keep condensation out of the electronics.

Rest assured, I will be recording life on the road. Photos. Video. Jottings in my pocket book. Just might take a while to pop onto the website. Please be patient.

Out of their trees

March 1st, 2011

koala - web

Close. Toyed with either a kangaroo or a koala as a mascot. Gone for the former. Skippy. Wise choice. In retrospect. For I’d subsequently discovered that latter probably wouldn’t convey quite the right image. Sleeps about sixteen hours a day. Even when awake, is generally stoned out of its especially small mind. Vacant stare. For some, living the dream. An aspiration. An entire work ethic. Still, you can’t exactly blame the cuddly little critters. If all you had to look forward to was easting eucalyptus leaves, reckon you’d soon loose the plot…

Brief encounter

February 27th, 2011

Scrubs up well. Not my words exactly. Rather those of breakfast radio presenter Mike "Locco" O’Loughlin. Describing Queensland Premier Anna Bligh. On air. With her. Aussies bit less deferential than might be the case in Blighty. I mean, could you imagine a British broadcaster mentioning something similar to, say, Ann Widdecombe?

Bligh - web

I’d come along to Queensland’s 4CA Talk Radio to chat with "Locco". My slot delayed a little by the chance appearance of the Premier. Whatever her politics, I’d a huge admiration for the leadership she’s shown during the various natural disasters that have beset Queensland of late. And a great choice of warm-up act. I was chuffed.

Always difficult to judge your own interview. As ever, completely cuffed. No idea exactly what’ll come up. Reliant on my Official Audience – my Mum and Dad – for feedback. Faith in their frankness. Thumbs up. Enjoyed teasing "Locco" about the drizzle outside – in truth, record Monsoon rains. And he’s a fellow cyclist. Chatting off air with him about his own experiences of riding along the banks of the River Danube. The route I’d followed across Europe.

Perfect medium

February 23rd, 2011

Fair to say I do like to chat. Once had a few stitches on my lip. Silenced for two whole days. Traumatic. Those around me seemed to take it pretty well. Very understanding. But now I’d been presented with the perfect medium. Talk radio. Surely it was Christmas…

radio - web

I’ve been invited to appear live on Mike "Locco" O’loughlin’s morning show at 4CA AM 846. Irresistible. Simply couldn’t say no. Another new experience. Besides, Locco has done some long-distance rides himself. So you can bet he’ll ask just how comfortable the saddle really is..

You can listen live online – from 10 pm UK time Thursday 25 February – at www.4cafm.com.au.
